Partnership with Blyth Spartans AFC

TyneMet College continues partnership with Blyth Spartans AFC

TyneMet College continues to develop partnership with North East football club, Blyth Spartans AFC. The partnership, formed in 2019, will see a group of students represent Blyth Spartans in the National Youth Alliance for the 2020-21 season, while undertaking a vocational course at TyneMet College.

The football programme, offered by TyneMet College is suitable for learners aged 16 and over who have a strong passion for football but also a desire to progress to a career within the sport industry. The programme allows students to study a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport alongside the opportunity to train and learn within a professional learning environment. Students on the programme also have the option to complete a Level 1 Football Coaching Award, First Aid and Basic Referee’s Award. First-team manager Michael Nelson will take charge of the under-19s, which could lead to a clear pathway between the college and senior level. Michael Nelson, manager of Blyth Spartans, said:

I’ll be coaching the under-19s side and taking charge of the games. We hope this will be a great chance for the young players to develop their game and possibly work their way into contention for the first team here at Blyth Spartans. There will be opportunities for the players who are excelling to be involved and integrated into the first team training sessions.

Ollie Rodley, Deputy Head of Sport at TyneMet College, comments:

We are delighted to continue our excellent partnership with Blyth Spartans AFC as our students have access to professional coaching to allow their development as a player. The experience of representing Blyth Spartans in a regional league helps to test their abilities and strengthen their football skills. The programme gives students the opportunity to continue their passion for football alongside their academic studies to allow progression to a career within sport. Many of our students have already achieved scholarships to study and play football in the USA, gained full-time employment within football, or progressed onto University study.
