Course Overview

This course is for you if you have future aspirations to progress to university to study engineering but would prefer a more combined vocational and academic route.

The course is equivalent to 3 ‘A’ Levels and gives you the opportunity to gain a qualification worth up to 168 UCAS points.

 

 

Following successful completion of the course, it offers opportunities to study at a wide variety of universities across the country on a range of Engineering qualifications, in subjects to suit your future career aims and aspirations.

Throughout your studies with us, you will be working in excellent facilities, from the classroom to workshops, using industry-standard equipment. You’ll also be taught by engineers with vast industry experience and close relationships with some of the region’s largest employers.

You will study a number of different subjects over the 2-years, such as:

  • Engineering Principles, combining Mathematics, Mechanical Principles and Electrical Principles
  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
  • Engineering Product Design and manufacture
  • Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
  • A Specialist Engineering Project
  • Microcontroller Systems for Engineers
  • Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems

These 7 subjects are known as the Mandatory Subjects.

The remaining subjects are known as Optional Subjects and could cover subjects as diverse as:

  • Computer Aided Design
  • Pneumatics and Hydraulic Systems
  • Welding technology
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits

 

A minimum of 5 GCSE grades 5 – 9, including Maths, English and a Science subject. An informal interview with the course tutor is required.

To gain the full Level 3 Extended Diploma, this course is studied over 2 years.

It is split into 2 separate qualifications

  • Year 1 ~ Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering
  • Year 2 ~ Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering

This allows students who may want to complete with the Foundation Diploma and progress, possibly into industry with an apprenticeship, and still gain a Level 3 Qualification which could be very beneficial in such an application.

You will be assessed through a combination of assessments and External BTEC Exams

The course is equivalent to 3 ‘A’ Levels and gives you the opportunity to gain a qualification worth up to 168 UCAS points.

Following successful completion of the 2-year Level 3 Extended Diploma Engineering, you will have the opportunity to progress to university in a wide variety of engineering disciplines, depending on your personal career aspirations.
