Delivered in partnership with the Newcastle Rugby Foundation, this qualification is designed for students who already have some experience in rugby coaching or officiating—whether through local clubs, schools, or volunteering at community events. The course aims to enhance your confidence and skill in delivering effective rugby coaching sessions while providing hands-on experience to develop your abilities as both a coach and match official.

As part of the course, you’ll receive with practical, ongoing support from experienced development staff at Newcastle Rugby Foundation.
You’ll also benefit from a range of guest speakers working within the rugby coaching sectors, offering insight into career pathways and best practices. In addition, there will be valuable opportunities to gain real-world experience across various levels of the rugby industry.
Alongside the qualification, you will also gain rugby specific qualifications.
You must be at least 17 years old with GCSEs Grade C/4 or above in English and maths as well as a passion for coaching/officiating within rugby.
One year.
You will be assessed through your coursework, which will include practical workbooks, discussions with your tutor as well as observation of practical coaching and officiating sessions.
Depending on other qualifications studied, you could progress onto a university degree such as Sports Coaching. There may also be opportunities to use industry specific qualifications gained to obtain part or full time work.
Careers include: Sports Coach, Sports Coaching Apprentice, PE Specialist Primary Teacher, Sports Development Officer.
Placements may include: Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, local football clubs, Northumberland FA, NUFC Foundation, TyneMet NESA as well as many more.
