Award in Welding Skills, Level 2 (MIG, TIG and MMA)

Course Overview

These courses are intended for those who need to obtain skills in Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Metal Inert Gas/Metal Active Gas (MIG/MAG) or Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.

Each welding process has a 60 hour time period (Based on 10 days at 6 hours a day)including end assessment. The courses are flexible and are held throughout the year with time slots agreed upon enrolment. This course is available Monday to Friday daytime.

 

 

Progression from this qualification is made via further experience and across the range of welding processes and can lead to welding industry qualifications such as ASME IX and BS EN 287.

The award is for those whose aim is to enter the industry and for those wanting to gain a welding qualification for their own personal skills development.

Upon completion of Level 2 award, students can also have their test pieces tested in accordance with British Standards 4872 which is recoginsed across industry.

A City & Guilds Level 1 or equivalent qualification is preferable. However, candidates must have the experience and potential to be successful in gaining the qualification.

The assessment includes five mandatory practical tests and an oral test which covers the knowledge requirements for each programme of study.

The oral test will be carried out with the assessor following successful completion of the practical tests.

Practical pieces will be assessed by visual inspection and destructive mechanical tests. Underpinning knowledge questions consist of 20 oral questions.

These qualifications are a platform for progression to other City & Guild qualifications that have a welding route.

For example,

  • City & Guilds 2850 Certificate in Engineering – Welding
  • City & Guilds 2850 Certificate in Engineering – Fabrication and Welding

The award can also provide skills development training towards an NVQ in Welding or an Engineering NVQ award that includes welding optional units
