Extended Diploma in Digital Technology – Level 3
Course Overview

Studied over two years, the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Information Technology is equivalent to three A Levels, providing an excellent pathway to university, higher apprenticeships, or a rewarding career in the digital industry.
To achieve the Extended Diploma qualification you will need to study the course over 2 years.
You will explore a wide range of IT topics, building both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Year 1 – Foundation Diploma
Units may include:
- Information Technology Systems
- Creating Systems to Manage Information
- Using Social Media in Business
- Programming
- Website Development
- Cyber Security
Year 2 – Extended Diploma
You will progress onto more advanced topics, such as:
- Games Design
- Data Modelling
- Cyber Security and Incident Management
- Advanced Programming or Development Projects
- Specialist optional units to suit your interests
You will also take part in project-based learning, working on realistic industry scenarios, and may have opportunities to engage with employers and live briefs.
Work placement or industry experience will form part of your course, helping you apply your learning in a real-world setting.
To study this course, you will need:
- 5 GCSEs at grade 4–9, including Maths and English
OR - A relevant Level 2 qualification at Merit or above, plus GCSE Maths and English at grade 4
Assessment is a mixture of:
- Coursework and practical projects
- External assessments and exams in key units
This typically combines substantial coursework with externally assessed units to ensure a balance of practical and theoretical understanding.
Many students progress to university degrees in areas such as:
- Computer Science
- Cyber Security
- Software Engineering
- Data Analytics
You may also progress onto:
- Higher or Degree Apprenticeships
