HNC in Healthcare Practice for England // Level 4
The HNC in Health Care Practice is a qualification designed
and developed to meet professional standards.
The HNC helps to develop not only academic skills and abilities, but
also work‑readiness
skills. It is recognised by employers
and universities.
This is a work-related qualification for students taking
their first steps into employment or those already in employment and seeking
career development opportunities. The HNC provides progression into the
workplace either directly or via study at university and it is also designed to
meet employer’s needs. Higher National qualifications are widely recognised by
industry and higher education as the principal technical professional
qualification. At level 4, the HNC is
recognised as being the same level as a first year UK Honours degree.
The content is stimulating and provides an exciting experience equipping learners with skills for the future world of Healthcare.

Entry Requirements
You will need to have successfully completed studies at level 3. You should also hold at least a GCSE grade C (4) or equivalent in English and you should have some experience of working either voluntarily or in employment within the health and social care sector.
BTEC Higher Nationals are a suitable option for anyone progressing from Level 3 study. Learners may have completed A-levels, a BTEC National or another equivalent qualification. Learners may come straight from Level 3 study, or have spent time in the workplace.
Core units
The Higher National qualification is made up of 7 units of
study. This qualification is directly mapped to apprenticeship core standards.
This means that all units studied on this course are core units.
You will study units including:
Unit 1 – Law, Policy and ethical practice in Health and
Social care
Unit 2 – Demonstrating Professional principles and values in
Health and Social care practice
Unit 3 – Supporting the Individual journey through
integrated Health and Social care
Unit 4 – Fundamentals of evidence based practice (Pearson
set project)
Unit 5 – Health education in Action
Unit 7 – Effective Healthcare practice using Maths
Unit 17 – Effective recording and reporting in healthcare
Assessment
Assessment methods are varied and include practice based
assessment. This may take place in a
work placement setting or in our dedicated clinical skills lab where you will
have access to a hospital ward with interactive manikins and health care
equipment
You will also be required to complete at least 225 hours in
placement or employment within a Health Care setting alongside your course.
Progression and
careers
The Healthcare Profession offers a variety of rewarding
careers working with adults and/or children both in the community and in
clinical settings.
The HNC in Health Care Practice may support you in making a
career change, or equally may support you in developing within your existing
career. This course may also support you
to gain entry to further HE study in Health related industries where
registration for work is mandatory. These industries could include Nursing,
Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Radiography amongst others.

The Health and Social care team at TyneMet are busy making preparations for the start of your programme in September 2020. Covid-19 has challenged the delivery of all educational and professional programmes and as such, the team have taken the decision to make exciting alterations to how the Health and Social care programmes will be delivered from September.
For our Foundation Degree programme, the University of Sunderland have developed emergency professional standards: an effective approach to your programme of study, blending face-to-face and online teaching.
On our HNC programme, we have developed temporary distance learning alterations to both learning and assessment to maximise your opportunities for success.
For both programmes, some theoretical lectures and pre-session reading will be delivered/available online using Microsoft Teams
Our experience has shown that this method opens new learning opportunities for all, enabling you to develop graduate skills such as time management, self-care and workload prioritisation, with support from the academic team.

FutureMe in the North East
