Skills for Life

Our Skills for Life and ESOL programmes can help you develop skills to benefit your life, chosen career path or current employment. From courses to help improve adult literacy and numeracy (Skills for Life in English and Maths) to dedicated language courses (English for Speakers of Other Languages) adult learners will find the department provides a supportive and stimulating learning environment.

Over the past eight years, 1.7 million adults in the UK have taken qualifications in maths and English - known as Skills for Life. These qualifications have helped them to get jobs, get promoted, and to help their children with their homework. At TyneMet you can get these qualifications for FREE.

If you want to brush up on your maths and English then choosing a Skills for Life course at TyneMet couldn't be easier. You'll also come away with a nationally-recognised qualification, develop the skills you use in everyday life, as well as boost your CV.

Find your level

The first step for everyone is to do an initial skills check. This will help the teacher see where your strengths are and the areas in which you need to improve. Your teacher will then work with you to prepare an Individual Learning Plan and choose the level of learning that suits you, from complete beginner right up to GSCE level.

Your plan will also contain targets so that you can decide the speed at which you want to learn and the topics that you need to cover.

You can gain the qualifications at the following levels

  • Entry Level:A stepping stone to the higher levels of study
  • Level 1:Equivalent to a GCSE D - G grade
  • Level 2:Equivalent to a GCSE A* - C grade

Fit the course around your lifestyle

Our Skills for Life courses are really flexible. You can choose to start a course at any time of the year. You can also choose where you want to study;

  • Coast Road Campus in Wallsend
  • Academy Campus in North Shields
  • Wallsend Children's Centre
  • Howdon Children's Centre
  • Meadows Community Centre
  • Oxford Center Longbenton
  • Killingworth Children's Centre
  • North West Communities Children's Centre
  • Fordley Primary School

Alternatively, if you can get together with a group of five other learners, we can deliver classes at your workplace or at a community centre near you. This is a great way to fit learning around your lifestyle.
