Constructionarium North East 2017
Constructionarium was a project that was set up to allow construction and engineering students from a range of levels and skills sets to get some hands on experience on a construction site. The students participating this year ranged from first year painter and decorators to 3rd year undergraduate civil engineering students. There were two team made up of a variety of students from different training providers.
In their teams the students were asked to build a scaled down version of the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield, in the Marsden Quarry. This gave the students an opportunity to get some insight into a live construction site and the industry they have been learning about in their classrooms.
The students highly enjoyed working on the quarry throughout the week and after observing them I feel it increased their confidence greatly.
In fact, one of my tasks throughout the week was to do student and staff surveys, I did these surveys at the beginning, middle and end of the project. So I could analyse the skills the students were gaining throughout the week and their confidence levels onsite.
I was also assigned the job of promoting the project via social media, to do this I had to create new accounts for the project and actively tweet #constructionariumNE17. I also helped to create Brochures and Certificates during the week, which we needed to be handed out at the celebration event. Making sure the event ran smoothly and preparing the marquee was also important and I assisted in, taking pictures throughout the week so they could be showcased at the event.
The highlight of the week for me was Wednesday when I helped run an employability workshop. This was a great chance to have a chat with the students and find out about their views of the week and to help them improve their CV’s.
Overall, I really enjoyed the week and it helped me to realise how many skills I have gained throughout my apprenticeship. It was a fantastic opportunity to be working in Marsden Quarry, especially with it being so different from my usual office environment. It was also great to meet new contacts and help the students.
