TyneMet is adding two brand new higher education courses to its established creative course portfolio in response to the demand for creative arts qualifications. Students wishing to study at an advanced level can now apply for a Foundation Degree (FdA) Applied Fine Art Practice and Foundation Degree (FdA) Graphic Communication, both delivered at the College’s Creative Studio with programmes in partnership with the University of Sunderland.
Alice Freeth, who is studying a higher education course in Fine Art at the Creative Studios said: “I’m a very determined individual and building my portfolio is essential to my success as a working artist. My work has been displayed in some truly fantastic venues, we work in a very similar way to a client brief and the great thing about the Creative Studios is the opportunity to participate in a wide range of exhibitions and events. My work has been displayed in some truly fantastic venues, and the quality of teaching is superb, I’ve learnt so much and feel confident when I finish my course I am prepared for the next step of my career journey.”
The Creative Studios aims to provide qualifications that meet the demand for skills in the regions booming creative sector and ensures students feel prepared for employment by building skills that are commercially credible.

TyneMet’s Creative Studios, Art Teacher, Dr Paul Harvey said: “The emerging talent of our students is very exciting, they produce work which is both innovative and authentic in its execution, the north has a bounty of talent and the Creative Studios provides a unique learning experience - one of the most important things for any creative is building their portfolio and developing skills, talent and professional client relationships.”
Liam Wright, who is studying a foundation degree in Graphic Design at the Creative Studios said: “Throughout the course I’ve had the opportunity to work on numerous live briefs, this has been invaluable because its basically the foundations of being a successful designer to truly encapsulate what a client wants and what they require is important. When I visited the Creative Studios, I was blown away! The teaching and facilities are amazing, my programme leader Dr Paul Harvey is an accomplished artist who had exhibited across the world, he is a brilliant role model, teacher and an inspirational artist. I am now looking to complete a top up year at the University of Sunderland and feel fully prepared for this because of my time at the Creative Studios.”
