TyneMet College Duo Qualify for England Squad
Two football students from the TyneMet Football Development Programme have been selected to be part of the British Colleges England Squad.
Left back John Grey, 18, from Heaton, studying on a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and striker Dan Young, 18, from Cramlington, studying on a L3 Extended Diploma in Sport, joined 33 players from all over the country at Coventry City Academy for a final training camp where they were all put through their paces by national coaching staff.
Both players will now be part of the England squad fixture programme for the remainder of the season. The programme includes a match against Australia in January and a training camp and match against New Zealand in February with an International Tour planned later in the season.
This is the second year running that TyneMet has had students selected to be part of National Squads. The selected players will follow a programme similar to that of the FA's England Youth National Teams.
The National Team is supported by an extensive network of college-based staff, and in 2011/12 England Colleges’ Football scouts will be appointed and deployed across all of the college divisions.
Professional Club scouts, US University scouts and non-league club scouts also regularly attend England Colleges Football fixtures, providing a great platform for players who impress them to access further progression opportunities.
England Colleges Football is the official National Team for FE college based players, run in partnership by British Colleges Sport and The Football Association.
Neil Baistow, Head Football Development Coach, TyneMet College said:
“This is a fantastic achievement for the two players who have both shown to be extremely committed to the football programme here at TyneMet. They have managed to do an excellent job of balancing their playing and studying commitments.
TyneMet was one of only two colleges who had more than one player selected for the Squad, this highlights that the coaching we deliver to the students is of a very high standard which will support players to develop their skills with the aim of being selected to play in higher levels of the game.”
