TyneMet and Queen Alexandra Colleges Save the Day for SUB 21

17 February 2012

A local community organisation, SUB 21, are currently using facilities at TyneMet and Queen Alexandra Colleges to continue to run football and catering sessions.

Previously both the catering and football sessions were delivered at Wallsend Boys Club, however the Youth Club has been closed since last month after it was damaged by strong winds.

TyneMet College has worked with SUB21, facilitating cookery programmes in the past and were more than happy to be able to help the organisation with accommodation for their groups.  One of TyneMet’s main priorities is to offer access to education, training and related advice and guidance for everyone in the area.  Working together with SUB21 allows the College to showcase the fantastic facilities and learning resources that are available to support both academic and vocational courses.

The football sessions are now being delivered on a Saturday evening at the Queen Alexandra College campus in North Shields and are attended by players aged 11–17, the 10 week training programme focuses on football skills and tactics.

The catering sessions, a starter cookery course, is a 10 week programme attended by youngsters aged 11-13 and now runs on a Tuesday evening in the fully resourced training kitchens at TyneMet’s Coast Road campus.

SUB21 is an award winning North Tyneside project helping to reduce curbside drinking among young people in the Wallsend, Howdon and Battle Hill areas of North Tyneside.  The project combines a package of support to off-licensees to help them tackle proxy purchases of alcohol, with a programme of youth-led activities and events, to provide an alternative to street drinking for young people.

TyneMet College realises the importance of supporting and working alongside Community Projects like SUB21; the College has excellent teaching facilities and opening these up to local Community Groups allows an insight in to learning in a College environment.  TyneMet is working closely with SUB 21 and further programmes such as Advanced Cookery, Barista and Silver Service training, Call Centre training and Fitness training are being developed to be delivered later in the year.

Wayne Daley, SUB 21 Co-ordinator, said:

“We are delighted to be working with TyneMet to strengthen the links between the College and the local community.  The support received from the College and the development of the new courses will allow SUB21 to continue to engage and work with young people in the local area.”

Paul Graham, Head of Service and Business Enterprises, TyneMet College, said:

“TyneMet College is pleased to be able to work with Community Groups like SUB21, as a College we have the capacity and resources to help young people develop their skills, interests and roles within the Community.  We are working closely with SUB21 to develop new courses relevant to young people so that they can gain qualifications and experience which will help them to apply for jobs or further training in the future.”
