Tyne Metropolitan College and Newcastle Eagles Flying High

21 February 2012

On Friday 17th February TyneMet College sponsored the Newcastle Eagles and Durham Wildcats, Basketball Derby Match.  Corporate guests and College staff enjoyed the fast paced match in which the Eagles soared to victory with a 94 – 69 win.

The crowd cheered as each basket was scored and the TyneMet staff had special shouts of encouragement for players Lamar Morrison, a student at TyneMet, currently studying on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Coaching, Development and Fitness) and Ross Wilson, who last year studied A Levels at the Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, balancing both his academic studies and his basketball, Ross managed to achieve an impressive A in both Maths and PE and a B in Biology.

Full time students studying at TyneMet College or at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College have the opportunity to join the North East Sports Academy (NESA) based at TyneMet’s Coast Road Campus.  NESA gives students access to professional sports training and coaching no matter which subject they are studying.

Mark McCutcheon, Head of NESA, TyneMet College, said:

“NESA offers students the perfect environment in which to develop their sporting talents and career whilst they study an academic or vocational qualification at TyneMet College

Our range of partnerships with Newcastle Eagles, Newcastle United Foundation, Team Northumbria, Newcastle United Women’s FC, PASS4SOCCER, North Tyneside Council, as well as local amateur clubs and sporting governing bodies offer NESA students a real opportunity to develop as an athlete and a sports person.

We are delighted with the career opportunities that Ross and Lamar now have and their attitude to work with NESA staff Marc Steutel and Chris Bunten has been first class.  Their effort and determination both on and off the basketball court has paid off for them and they are now an important part of the Newcastle Eagles first team”.

Jon Vincent, Principal and Chief Executive, TyneMet College, said:

“We are delighted to have been able to sponsor this Derby Match.  TyneMet has over many years developed a fantastic relationship with the Newcastle Eagles and are extremely proud of both Lamar and Ross, they are very talented players and great ambassadors for both the Eagles and the College.”

TyneMet staff, basketball experts, Marc Steutel, Head Coach of Basketball and Development and Chris Bunten, Strength and Conditioning Coach (and Level 3 Basketball Coach) were on hand throughout the match to explain the intricacies of play to guests.

Congratulations to the Newcastle Eagles on another superb win; TyneMet wishes them every success as they continue to triumph as one of the top teams in the British Basketball League (BBL).
