Tyne Metropolitan College’s Rhianna Telfer has secured a prestigious football scholarship in the USA.
Rhianna, who studied A Levels at the College’s sixth form campus, Queen Alexandra, said:
“I have always loved football. From an early age I would play with my brother and friends, my love for the game developed from that! Football has always been a big part of my life, I’ve had some great coaches who have developed my playing ability and skills, giving me the confidence to pursue my dreams.”
“I live quite far away, but when the time came to choose a college, TyneMet was my first choice. Alongside my football I wanted to gain qualifications and the College offered it all – great coaches and great academic teaching. My big dream has always been to study and play football in America, because of TyneMet’s excellent links with PASS4Soccer I’ve been able to experience university tours across the USA. I’d thank all of my coaches that I’ve had since I was 8 years’ old that have helped me become the footballer I am today and helping me getting this far. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
Rhianna will be joining Delta State University located in Cleveland, Mississippi and play for the “Lady Statesmen” soccer team.
PASS4Soccer’s Daniel Gray said: “Rhianna demonstrated unique talent, drive and determination from the beginning. Rhianna has an amazing opportunity in front of her, it’s brilliant to see her hard work pay off and we’re very happy to have supported her in achieving a place at a very prestigious university.”
PASS4Soccer was established in 2002, with the aim of setting up an organisation to educate coaches, teachers, players and parents about scholarships in the USA and to help players who demonstrate a desire to progress into higher education and win a sport scholarship.
Rhianna’s achievement in winning such a high value scholarship and placement is in recognition of both her academic achievements to date and her athletic ability. Rhianna also had the opportunity to visit the USA for a week and play against top university sides while recruiting coaches from the surrounding states attended the games.
TyneMet and PASS4Soccer have enjoyed a long history of students progressing to successful scholarships in the USA. Daniel Smee, a former student of TyneMet is working as a football coach in the US following graduation in the USA.
TyneMet has a unique partnership with Pass4Soccer which encourages and supports students who want to access American scholarships.
TyneMet’s Deputy Head of Sport, Chris Wall said:
“We are absolutely delighted for Rhianna, her dedicated, positive attitude to both her studies and football has now seen Rhianna truly living her dream in America.”
