Outstanding results for AS and A Level students place Queen Alexandra as one of the top performing sixth forms in the region with an astounding 99.8% pass rate; marking further improvement on the previous year’s results (99.1%), and a remarkable increase of 71% in the number of students achieving A* grades.

Students and staff at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College in North Shields are celebrating today after they excelled in this year’s A Level exams. The atmosphere at the College was charged with excitement as students’ hard work and determination paid off – with students receiving outstanding grades to take the next step into Higher Education or other promising career pathways.

Lee Patterson, Head Teacher at Queen Alexandra from September, said:

“We are delighted with our A Level results across all subject areas, what a fantastic outcome for the College. We are absolutely overjoyed with our results, with a 100% pass rate in STEM-related subjects with students also achieving A*s in revered subjects such as Further Maths. We are a Sixth Form College specialising in A Level teaching, helping to bridge the gap between school and Higher Education, and providing all the support the students need to succeed but in an environment that better prepares them for their next steps in life.”

Euan Stuart, 18, received an A* in Maths, A* in Further Maths, A in Physics and a B in History. The former John Spence High School pupil, who chose to study A Levels at Queen Alexandra because of the College’s STEM assured accreditation and excellent reputation, said: “I am delighted with my grades and now hope to study Maths at Glasgow University. The excellent teaching and support create an amazing environment in which to do well. Queen Alex has been instrumental in helping me to achieve my best, which is evident in my grades.”

The success stories continue with Sophia Puliasis, 18, who came to the UK two years ago from Greece. She was ecstatic to receive an A grade in Maths, and two Bs in Chemistry and Biology. Sophia said: “I couldn’t be happier with my grades – I now plan to study Biomedical Science at university. I feel prepared for the next step because Queen Alex offers so much support and the opportunities are amazing – I was awarded STEM student of the Year 2014 and was head of the Student Council. I’m really proud of all that I have achieved at Queen Alex Sixth Form – I have made some great memories.”

Along with university success stories, an array of career destinations were present during the morning’s excitement. Ryan Macciocchi, 18, from North Shields, has been accepted on a Management Accountancy Programme, which will see him work nationally for global giant, Siemens. Ryan achieved two A*s in Maths and Further Maths, an A in Physics and a B in Business Studies. He said: “I am so happy with my results, it really is down to the great teaching at Queen Alex – everybody wants you to do well. I chose an apprenticeship because I want to pursue a Maths-related career. For me Maths is not just a subject, it’s an interest.”
