TyneMet College celebrated its annual Further Education Awards Ceremony on Thursday 26th June 2014 at the Whitley Bay Playhouse. This celebratory event was, for the fourth year running, sponsored by Potts Print (UK).
The College was delighted to welcome Mark Allison (Run Geordie Run), as the key note speaker for the Ceremony, who congratulated all of the students on their achievements and gave an inspirational speech about education and helping people to fulfil their potential.
33 students were selected to win ‘Student of the Year’ awards in the categories of their academic or vocational disciplines. Local and national businesses sponsored each award category and a company representative was on stage to congratulate each winner and present them with their trophy.
The support of the sponsors made the event a real celebration of success and the College was delighted to have the opportunity to showcase its relationship with these organisations to the 400 strong audience made up of students’ families and friends, honoured guests, local businesses and representatives from across the region.
Dan Tobin, Executive Director, at Potts Print (UK), presented the prestigious ‘Overall TyneMet Student of the Year Award’ to A Level student Ronnie Burgess, 18, from North Shields.
Ronnie was also the winner in the ‘Art and Design Student of the Year’ award category which automatically entered him as a candidate for the ‘Overall TyneMet Student of the Year Award’. Ronnie was nominated because of his exceptional industry standard design work and his three A grades that he was awarded last year for AS Film Studies, Media Studies and Art and Design. His support for other students was said to be inspirational and he has never missed one of his lessons. Described as a beacon of positivity, Ronnie has also been predicted A grades for his A level subjects this year.
Ronnie’s ambition is to continue his education studying a degree in Computer Games Development at the University of Central Lancashire. Once he has completed his degree, he hopes to gain employment within a leading game company either here or in America.
“When I attended the initial Open Evening at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College I was very impressed when I saw the high standard of student’s work on show and wondered whether I would ever be good enough to produce such work.
“However with the support of my teachers Davey Bell and James Ward, my pastoral tutors and fellow students my confidence and skill levels have grown significantly.
“I feel proud and honoured to have been chosen to receive this award and I am grateful that my work at College has been acknowledged in this way.”
Jon Vincent, Principal and Chief Executive, TyneMet College said:
“This year’s Further Education Awards Ceremony was again a fantastic success and a testament to the quality of teaching and learning delivered by the teaching and support staff at TyneMet and Queen Alexandra Colleges and TMC, Benton. Many of the students have forged a very exciting progression or career path for themselves; we wish them success in all that they go on to do in the future.
I would like to thank Potts Print (UK), for again; being the overall Sponsor of this event as well as extending thanks to all of the individual category sponsors; their support today and throughout the academic year is greatly appreciated.”
