A collective celebration of success, achievements and accolades of Tyne Metropolitan College’s students resounded in the walls of the Whitley Bay Playhouse on the 7th July 2015. Sponsors, Governors, honoured guests, students and their families came together to celebrate the significant achievements of TyneMet’s students.

At the FE Awards event, the College welcomed Ann Cleeves as the key note speaker who congratulated all of the students on their achievements; giving an impressive speech on never giving up on your dreams. The award winning author remarked that her own personal journey of becoming an established writer had been a long one and her own dream of getting published had been a considered, tireless effort.

Students were presented with awards for their hard work, positive attitude and determination to succeed.  In the engineering awards category - strong contenders receiving the highly commendable accolade for their achievements were Jack Mathieson and Liam Ross  who were awarded silver with Joel Velasco crowned ‘Engineering Student of the Year’.

Joel was nominated for his incredible dedication and hard work, achieving excellence attendance and punctuality whilst being part of extra-curricular activities at the College including the NESA basketball team and holding down a part-time job on top of his studies.

Joel said: “It was a great surprise to be nominated and a great feeling.  TyneMet has helped me to achieve my goals and I’ve really enjoyed my course especially the practical element. I am now interested in an apprenticeship in engineering to advance my skills.”

Jon Vincent, Principal and Chief Executive of TyneMet College, expressed his delight at so many students progressing with excellent results and excellent futures ahead.

Closing the FE Awards, Bill Midgley, Chair of Governors at TyneMet College, said:

“It’s a tremendous achievement to see the high performance of our students continually excel and grow and it’s a proud moment for the College to witness the future of our workforce being recognised for their passion. Without the willingness to learn - the world stops. ”
