A Preparation for Life and Work student at TyneMet College, studying on the Broadening Horizons course, is delighted to have been offered a full-time job with cleaning services company MITIE.

As part of the Broadening Horizons course students are required to undertake a work placement and Craig Lane, 20, from Ashington was very happy to be selected for an eight week work training placement with MITIE.

After only a few weeks into his work placement Craig had established himself amongst his colleagues as a hardworking and committed member of the team and at the end of the placement MITIE Services Manager, Dawn French, was so impressed with Craig’s work ethic that she decided to offer him a permanent position at MITIE.

Craig said:

“I am so happy - since starting this course it has been my goal to become more independent and look for a job.

“I am completely buzzing with excitement and can’t wait to start getting paid for doing a job which I really enjoy!”

Dawn French, Service Manager at MITIE said:

“MITIE has been offering work placements to Preparation for Life and students at TyneMet for a while now; Craig was one of two students who recently undertook a placement with us.

“We receive all the support we need from Charlotte Peace the Preparation for Life and Work Placement Coordinator at the College and this arrangement is working well for both MITIE and the students.

“Craig always gave 110% on his work placement and has become a valued member of our team. During the placement he was also working with his teachers who were supporting him with his independent travel arrangements. Craig now has no problems travelling into college from Ashington on his own.

“I am looking forward to working with Craig and we are delighted to now have him as a permanent member of our team.”

Andrea Cochrane, Head of Preparation for Life and Work, TyneMet College, said:

“Work placements like this are invaluable to our students and MITIE is just one of the many organisations who support our students by providing them with a real life working experience.

“I am absolutely thrilled that Craig has secured permanent employment, his aspiration to live as an independent adult has come to fruition and I would like to thank MITIE for making this possible.”
