From an early age, GaryLee McMullen a keen badminton player showed a passion, talent and a hunger to get ahead. Competing nationally from the age of 12, head hunted by county teams, battling it out in national tournaments and currently representing Northumberland - GaryLee has experienced a great start to life as a sportsman - choosing Tyne Metropolitan College to continue his love of the sport, GaryLee, a Level 3 Sports Coaching and Fitness student and part of the NESA Badminton team, was recently awarded the ‘Young Sports Achievement Award’ which recognises over achievers for their commitment to sports and the community.

The Premier 4 Sports League 2014 celebrates the achievements of rising stars in Sport, those who go far beyond the call to support and develop sporting enthusiasm within their communities. The Level 3 student was nominated by Newcastle United Foundation for his tireless desire to coach others; initially persuaded to join badminton through the PL4S programme by the Director of Sport at his school, GaryLee is a now a talented badminton player - keen to make his mark in the world of Sport.

The black tie event, which was held at Middlesbrough Football Club, brought together clubs from across the North East, GaryLee said of his award: “I was so shocked to be put forward for the award by Newcastle United Foundation, let alone win the award, everyone nominated was a deserving winner – for me, it’s an honour to be able to pass on the knowledge I have learnt from my time as a player in county teams, to the invaluable experiences I have gained at NESA. I love coaching and it’s great to see new badminton talent shine through, I really enjoyed the evening – I took my mum as my guest, she’s really proud of me”.

Deputy Head of NESA at TyneMet College, Chris Wall said: “The Premier League for Sports Award is a great occasion to commend young players who go that extra mile. GaryLee’s dedication to progressing as a player and as a coach is clearly demonstrated in his latest achievement, he was an excellent candidate for nomination and a truly deserving winner – this is a hard award to obtain so GaryLee should be extremely proud”.
