Monday marked the 25th anniversary of an all-time Disney favourite ‘The Little Mermaid’, which opened in theatres on 17th November 1989. The animated feature which put Disney princesses firmly back on the movie map and captivated audiences young and old over the years has also inspired the theme of TyneMet Hairdressing Apprentice Joanne Turnbull’s college project.

Joanne Turnbull approached fellow TyneMet student Kelly Hilton, who is studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design at the Creative Studios in North Shields, about the concept of designing a mermaid outfit.
Kelly took up the challenge despite not having a huge amount of garment design experience, and although an ambitious task, it was one that Kelly took seriously and worked extremely hard to succeed in.

Throughout the process Joanne and Kelly’s creativity shone through as their ideas came to life via an innovative costume design and beautiful hair styling. Kelly said: “I was really excited to see the garment that I designed on the model and worked closely with Joanne as she created her hair and makeup theme to complete the look.”

Joanne added: “Although a little daunting at first, I am pleased that I took this project on and feel confident embarking on other opportunities like this in the future. I can use all of the techniques that I’ve practiced here on other clients in the College’s Retreat Salon.”

Course Leader Tracy Affleck said: “It’s been really valuable for Kelly to work to a live brief like this and achieve such a fantastic result in such a short time frame. Visually the whole project looks stunning and is a great example of how students from different courses can work together to tackle and overcome a challenge.”

A photo shoot to capture the students’ achievements took place this week at TyneMet’s Coast Road Campus in Wallsend to the delight of Joanne and Kelly as well as all who witnessed their superb creation.
