Foundation Degree in Counselling

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • have successfully completed a recognised level three qualification in counselling
  • have the skills and personal qualities which would enable you to become a reflective practitioner
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to study at Foundation Degree level
  • be 18 years of age or over. (There is no upper limit to age and the course attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and ages)
  • be able to engage in supportive helping relationships in a paid or voluntary role in year one
  • be able to carry out at least 100 hours of supervised counselling practice in an external placement in year two in line with course requirements

Year One:

  • The Core Model of Counselling
  • Professional Issues in Counselling
  • Comparative Models of Counselling
  • Counselling Skills and Practice
  • Personal Development (level 1)

Year Two:

  • Supervised Counselling Practice (minimum 100 hours in work placement) in addition to class time which maximises the benefit of work based learning
  • Introduction to Counselling Research
  • Contemporary Issues in Counselling
  • Personal Development (level 2) including facilitated encounter groups

Why Tynemet

This course is run in partnership with the University of Sunderland at Tyne Metropolitan College,
this course will interest students who wish to gain a professional counselling qualification. It is run in line with BACP guidelines and is validated by the University of Sunderland, who are the awarding body of the course.

The course is orientated in the Humanistic Approach, with a focus on Person Centred Therapy. Psychodynamic theory, CBT and Time Limited Counselling are also covered in applicable modules. You will attend college on a part time basis for two 3 hour sessions per week.
In the second year you will additionally be in a suitable counselling placement.

Interesting Facts

The large, purpose-built, foundation degree counselling classroom contains private booths for skills practice. Some of these are fitted with recording equipment. The course lecturers have a wide range of experience and qualifications in the counselling field and are all either BACP accredited or are working towards accreditation.
