Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, which must include Maths (at grade B or above) and either Double Science (at grade BB or above) or Chemistry (at grade B or above).

Course Content

This programme is divided into chemicaltopics, each of which covers a key concept. Once the key features of a chemical topic have been explored, students consider how the science is applied. AS Chemistry is split into three main subject areas. These are: Atoms, Bonds and Groups; Chains, Energy and Resources and Practical Skills.GCE AS is made up of three units:

Unit 1 F321 – Atoms, Bonds and Groups

  • Atoms and Reactions
  • Electrons, Bonding and Structure
  • The Periodic Table

Unit 2 F322 – Chains, Energy and Resources

  • Basic Concepts and Hydrocarbons
  • Alcohols, Halogenoalkanes and Analysis
  • Energy
  • Resources

Unit 3 F323 – Practical Skills in Chemistry 1

Interesting Facts

By studying the subject students will learn:

  • How a bullet proof vest works
  • Why ozone isn’t always a good thing
  • How chemists are devising strategies to combat global warming
  • Why bee and wasp stings are opposites
  • Why some substances are coloured and how to make dyes
  • What you can do with bat droppings
  • How chemistry can be used to solve crime

Start date: September one year

Assessment

One 1 hour written exam and one 1 hour 45 minute written exam and a series of practical activities carried out in class time throughout the year.

Progression To

A2 Level Chemistry
You need chemistry to become a Doctor or a Veterinarian but you can also use it to help get a
career as a Forensic Scientist, an Engineer, an Oceanographer a Patent Lawyer.
