Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, which must include Maths (at grade B or above) and either Double Science (at grade BB or above) or Chemistry (at grade B or above). AS Chemistry..

Course Content

Students who have achieved Chemistry at AS level can move on to complete the full A2 qualification. The course is divided into chemical topics, each of which covers a key concept. Once the key features of a chemical topic have been explored, students consider how the science is applied. The programme is split into three main areas.
These are: Rings, Polymers and Analysis; Equilibria, Energetics and Elements and Practical Skills.
GCE A2 is made up of three units:

Unit 4 F324 – Rings, Polymers and Analysis

  • Rings, Acids and Amines
  • Polymers and Synthesis
  • Analysis

Unit 5 F325 – Equilibria, Energetics and Elements

  • Rates, equilibria and pH
  • Energy
  • Transition Elements

Unit 6 F326 – Practical Skills in Chemistry 2

  • Why bee and wasp stings are opposites
  • Why some substances are coloured and how to make dyes

  • How chemistry can be used to solve crime

Start date: September one year

Assessment

One 1 hour written exam and one 1 hour 45 minute written exam and the completion of a number of set practical tasks.

Progression To

A2 Chemistry can lead to a degree in chemistry. Doctors, veterinarians, forensic scientists, engineers, oceanographers and patent lawyers are just some of the professionals who require chemistry.
