Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at grade C or above, which must include Maths, English and either Double Science (at grade BB or above) or Biology (at grade B or above). AS Biology.
Course Content
Students who have achieved Biology at AS level can move on to complete the full A2
qualification. This course encourages students to develop essential knowledge of concepts and understanding in biology, an understanding of scientific methods
and an awareness of advances in biotechnology. Students will explore topics such as populations and the environment, considering how living organisms form ecosystems. They will also learn how human activity affects ecological balance and how genetic variation and isolation may lead to the formation of a new species. Other learning areas include homeostasis, genes and genetic expression and the biology of the nervous and endocrine systems.
The programme consists of three units:
Unit 4 – Populations and Environment
Students will explore how living organisms form ecosystems, through which energy is transferred and chemical elements cycled. They will also cover how human activity affects ecological balance in a variety of ways and how genetic variation and isolation may lead to the formation of a new species.
Unit 5 – Control in Cells and in Organisms
Students will learn about stimulus and responses – the biology of the nervous and endocrine systems. Other topics covered in this unit are homeostasis and the maintenance of constant internal environment and genes and genetic expression.
Unit 6 – Practical and Investigative Skills
Practical work relating to the topics covered in Units 4 and 5

Start date: September one year
Assessment
One 1 hour 30 minute written exam and one 2 hour 15 minute written exam plus a practical assessment.
Progression To
A2 Biology is a sound basis for a degree in biology or many other areas of study.
