The Higher Education Foundation Course (HEFC) is a 60 credit Access to Higher Education Diploma. It is validated by Ascentis (formerly OCNW) and Northumbria University.
The HEFC provides appropriate preparation and a recognised qualification for progression to Higher Education programmes for those who have the ability to study at the higher level, but who left school with few (or none) of the usual entry qualifications. The programme enhances students’ academic, vocational and personal competence. It also aims to:
- Re-introduce students to education in a non-threatening learning environment where prior skills and experience are recognised and the particular needs of those returning to learning are addressed
- Offer students a flexible, responsive, supportive, coherent, stimulating and user-friendly return to learning at a level appropriate for entry to HE
- Develop the study, IT and communication skills necessary to enable students to succeed in HE
- Provide appropriate support and guidance according to individual needs
- Raise student awareness of opportunities that a return to study and lifelong learning can bring
To achieve the full award, students must successfully complete three subject modules (each comprising two 9 credit units), plus the compulsory HE Toolbox unit (6 credits).
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Although the HEFC is a course designed for adults, there is no minimum age limit for entry. However, all applicants must have had a significant break from study.
All students should have a Level 2 qualification in Maths and English, such as GCSE at grade C or above or a Level 2 National Test in Adult Numeracy or Literacy.
PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES
Students can progress into Higher Education on successful completion of the award. Opportunities lie within both universities and college-based degree level courses. TyneMet will guarantee students an interview for our own
Foundation Degrees, HNDs and HNCs where the appropriate entry requirements are met.
ACCESS COURSES AT TYNEMET COLLEGE
There are two modes of study on this programme: a one-year route and a two-year route.
The one-year route is delivered full-time over 32 weeks, meaning that you can gain access to Higher Education within one year of starting the course. You will take three subject modules in addition to the 'Toolbox Study Skills' module and tutorial sessions.
